What to expect

If you decide to join us for Sunday worship at 10:30 am you will be welcomed at the door by a member of the welcome team. They will give you an order of service. You can sit where you like, there is also a balcony accessed by stairs from the vestibule. It doesn’t matter what you wear as there is great variety in how people dress for church in our congregation. If you want to play safe go for smart casual, but you are welcome in whatever you are comfortable!

Our service usually follows a recognisable pattern, something like this:

  • Welcome
  • Opening hymn
  • Prayer of approach
  • Bible readings
  • All age talk
  • Sermon
  • Offering
  • Prayers of thankgiving and intercession (for others)
  • Benediction (blessing)

All these elements are interspersed with hymns and worship songs, for which we stand if able to do so. They are projected on a screen so you don’t need a hymn book and if you’re not familiar with them you can just listen and try! We sing as a way to worship God and to remind ourselves of the key lessons of the faith.

The Bible readings and sermon in the protestant tradition get quite a strong focus as we regard these as God’s words to us. In the sermon the minister explores how the Bible passage is relevant to our lives today. Often there are opportunities in the all age talk or in the delivery of the sermon for interaction with the congregation.

After the service we serve coffee and tea at the front of the church and we encourage people to stay behind and chat together to get to know each other and to discuss the service if you like!

The service usually lasts about 50 minutes to an hour.

We have a collection (offering) for the work of the local congregation and the Church of Scotland nationally - we now no longer pass a plate but there is one by the exit. You don’t have to give, but are welcome to contribute if you wish. You can give cash, cheque or if you wish to give online, or by standing order please see our page about giving.

If you have small children with you are very welcome to keep them with you during the service. There is a play area at the front of the church for small children.  If you find they are getting very restless you can take them to Millennium Room off the vestibule. Here you can still hear the service and there are some toys. You can rejoin us whenever you want.

We also have monthly all age services at the end of each month where children and young people play a very active part in the service. They are usually held in the hall.

Toilets are accessed through the halls under the sanctuary. There is a disabled toilet with baby change facilities – please ask for directions.
